ternik.online ("ternik.online," "we," "us," or "our") operates the website at https://ternik.online (the "Site"), where we publish original, practical macOS guides — how-tos, maintenance and diagnostics, security explainers, networking basics, and a small literature section. We respect your privacy. This Policy explains what information is collected when you use the Site, how it is used and shared, and the choices you have. By using the Site, you agree to the practices described here. If you do not agree, please discontinue use of the Site.

The Site is available internationally and is operated as a small independent publication. Where this Policy refers to specific legal rights, those rights apply to you if the relevant law applies to you.

1. Information We Collect

a. Information you provide to us. The Site requires no account — you can read every guide without registering, signing in, or giving us any personal information. We only receive personal information you choose to send us, which in practice means when you:

  • email us at hello@ternik.online with a question, correction, or suggestion (your email address, any name you sign with, and the contents of your message); or
  • send us a copyright or privacy request, which necessarily includes the contact details the law requires.

The contact form on our contact page is not a server-side form. It opens a pre-filled draft in your own email application, so what you type there is never transmitted to or stored by this Site unless you choose to send the email yourself.

We do not operate a newsletter, we do not host user accounts or comments, and we do not ask for or knowingly collect payment card numbers, government identifiers, precise geolocation, or other sensitive personal information.

b. Information collected automatically. Like most websites, we and our service providers automatically receive certain technical information when you visit, which may include your IP address, approximate location derived from it, browser type and language, device type, operating system, referring and exit pages, the pages you view, links you click, and the date and time of your visit. This is used to operate, secure, analyse, and improve the Site, and is generally not used to identify you personally.

c. Cookies and similar technologies. We and our third-party partners use cookies, pixels, and local storage to run the Site, remember your cookie choice, measure traffic, and — through our advertising partner — display advertising. Section 2 explains the categories and your controls; our Cookie Policy lists them in detail.

2. Cookies and How to Control Them

Cookies are small text files stored on your device. The Site uses three categories:

  • Essential. Required for the Site to work and to remember the cookie choice you make in the consent message.
  • Analytics. Google Analytics 4, used to understand how visitors find and use the Site (Section 4).
  • Advertising. Set by Google and its advertising partners to fund the guides (Section 3).

Consent. Where consent is required by law — including for visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland — it is collected through Google's consent management, a Google-certified consent management platform delivered with Google AdSense. You are shown a consent message before advertising and analytics cookies are set, and you can change or withdraw your choice at any time through that message. Declining means non-essential cookies are not set.

You can also control cookies through your browser settings. Most browsers let you view, delete, and block cookies, including third-party cookies, though blocking some may affect how the Site functions.

3. Advertising — Google AdSense and Third-Party Advertising

The guides are free to read and funded by advertising. We display advertising through Google AdSense. To serve these ads:

  • Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites.
  • Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this Site and/or other sites on the Internet.
  • Third-party vendors and ad networks may place and read cookies on your browser, or use pixels or your IP address, to collect information as a result of ad serving on the Site. Some ads may be personalised based on your interests; others are non-personalised and based on page content or general location.

Google may also use an advertising cookie (historically the "DART cookie") to serve ads based on your visits to this and other sites. That cookie does not store personally identifying information such as your name or email address.

4. Analytics — Google Analytics 4

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how visitors find and use the Site so we can improve it. GA4 uses cookies and similar identifiers to collect information such as pages viewed, session duration, traffic source, approximate city- or region-level location, device, and browser. In GA4, IP addresses are not logged or stored by default, and Google processes this data on our behalf as our service provider.

You can read how Google uses data at policies.google.com/privacy. You can opt out of Google Analytics across all websites by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on, or decline analytics cookies in the consent message shown on the Site.

5. How We Use Information

We use the information described above to:

  • operate, maintain, and secure the Site;
  • publish and improve our guides;
  • respond to your questions, corrections, privacy requests, and copyright notices;
  • measure performance and understand which guides are useful;
  • display and measure advertising;
  • detect and address fraud, abuse, and technical faults; and
  • comply with legal obligations.

6. How We Share Information

We do not sell your personal information for money. We share limited information with the service providers that help us operate the Site, each under its own privacy policy: Google (AdSense advertising and Google Analytics) and our website host and content delivery network. We may also disclose information where required by law, to enforce our Terms, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of ternik.online, our readers, or the public.

Please note that the use of advertising and analytics cookies may be considered "sharing" of personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising under some US state laws — see Section 9.

Our guides link to third-party websites, most often Apple's own support documentation, which we cite as sources. We are not responsible for the privacy practices or content of those sites, and we encourage you to review their policies.

8. Children's Privacy (COPPA)

The Site is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us personal information, contact hello@ternik.online and we will delete it. If you are under 13, please do not send us personal information.

9. US State Privacy Rights (CCPA/CPRA)

If you are a California resident — and, in substance, if you are covered by a comparable state privacy law — you have the right to:

  • Know the categories and specific pieces of personal information we collect, the sources, the purposes, and the categories of third parties we share it with;
  • Delete personal information collected from you, subject to exceptions;
  • Correct inaccurate personal information;
  • Opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information (we do not sell personal information for money, but our use of advertising cookies may qualify as "sharing" for cross-context behavioural advertising);
  • Limit the use of sensitive personal information — noting that we do not use or disclose sensitive personal information in a way that triggers this right; and
  • Not be discriminated against for exercising your rights.

To opt out of sharing for targeted advertising, decline non-essential cookies in the consent message shown on the Site, or use the advertising opt-outs listed in Section 3. For any other request — to know, delete, or correct your personal information — contact hello@ternik.online. We may need to verify your identity before responding, and you may use an authorised agent where the law permits.

10. GDPR and UK GDPR Rights

If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, you have the right to access, correct, delete, and port your personal data, to restrict or object to processing, and to withdraw consent at any time. Our lawful bases are: consent for analytics and advertising cookies (withdrawable at any time through the consent message), and legitimate interests for operating and securing the Site and responding to your correspondence.

11. Data Security

We use reasonable technical and organisational measures, including HTTPS encryption in transit, to protect information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, however, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

12. Data Retention

We keep personal information only as long as necessary for the purposes described here or as required by law. Correspondence is kept for as long as needed to deal with your enquiry and any follow-up; analytics data is retained according to the retention period configured in Google Analytics; and your cookie choice is stored in your own browser until you change it or clear your browser data.

13. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes we will post the updated Policy on this page and revise the "Last updated" date above. Your continued use of the Site after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated Policy.
